MÉTALL. Faire subir à la fonte un premier affinage qui a pour but d'éliminer le silicium qu'elle contient et de la décarburer. Pour mazer la fonte, on la soumet à la fusion dans un foyer de forge, on la coule en plaques minces, et on la brise en morceaux (WURTZ, Dict. de chim., t.1, 2e vol., 1870, p.1437).
Prononc.:[maze] ou [-], (il) maze [ma:z] ou [-]. Étymol. et Hist. 1824 fonte mazée (THÉNARD, Traité de chim., t.3, p.499). Mot d'orig. obscure.
DÉR. Mazéage, subst. masc. Finage de la fonte. Le traitement de la fonte par ce procédé ne permet pas de déphosphorer et on ne peut traiter que de petites quantités à la fois. 2 Puddlage. — Cette opération comprend trois périodes: 1 Le mazéage ou finage de la fonte; 2 L'affinage proprement dit; 3 Le réchauffage et le forgeage du fer.
